What is Four Groups?

Four Groups is a daily category grouping puzzle. You start with a board of sixteen words and must divide them into four sets of four. The words in each set share a specific connection: they might belong to the same category, complete the same phrase, share a hidden feature, or relate in another deliberate way.

The challenge comes from overlap. A word may seem to fit more than one possible idea, so solving the board means finding the exact four groups the puzzle was built around.

How to play Four Groups

  1. Study all sixteen words before locking in a guess.
  2. Select four words you believe share one connection.
  3. Submit the set. A correct group locks into place and reveals its category.
  4. Solved groups receive a difficulty color and label.
  5. Find all four groups before using all four mistakes.
SIMPLE EXAMPLE

APPLE · BANANA · PEAR · PLUM

Those four could form a group because they are fruits. A real Four Groups board is designed to be less obvious, with decoys and cross-category relationships that make you reconsider your first instinct.

Four Groups strategy

Start with the connection you can define most precisely. A vague relationship such as “things found outside” is usually weaker than something exact such as “tree species” or “words that follow snow.” Once a group is removed, the remaining words often become much easier to read.

If two possible groups compete for the same word, look for the option that leaves a cleaner set behind. The whole board has to resolve into four complete groups, so every selection affects the rest of the puzzle.

Difficulty colors and set difficulty

When a group is solved, Four Groups shows its difficulty color and label. The completed puzzle also reports the overall set difficulty. That makes it easier to tell whether a board was genuinely nasty or whether one connection simply happened to catch you.
